My Smartphone Photography Tips

While I can't be at every event, I wanted to share some of my tips for taking great photos with your smartphone. These tips and images are based on my iPhone 14 Pro, but the settings on your smartphone are likely similar.

Clean your lens

This may seem obvious, but a great moment can be ruined by a greasy fingerprint.

Steady & Level

Hold your phone steady (especially when using Night Mode); level and just above your eye-level to prevent your subjects from looking down on you.

Live Mode

Live Mode essentially takes a mini-video instead of a single snap shot. Once you have taken your photo, you can edit in live mode and select a more desirable image as your key photo.

Night Mode

This mode extends the exposure time to let in more light. This is great for capturing the northern lights, but if you are photographing a moving subject they may appear blurred.

Using Your Flash

By tapping the down arrow, you can select your flash mode. Auto lets the phone decide if a flash is needed, while On forces the flash to fire, and Off keeps it inactive.

Remember, your flash can only reach so far. Try to stay within 2-5 meters of your subject.

Editing Tools

Your phone has many built-in editing tools to help you end up with the best image possible. You can brighten a photo, reduce shadows, even easily erase an unwanted item.

Take the time to learn about these features and test them out. You can always hit Revert or Undo to discard your changes.
